Grocery Shopping

As I mentioned in another post, grocery shopping has been somewhat of an adventure since we arrived here in Honolulu. Our first day we were lucky enough that someone took and showed us where the local Wal-Mart is (which is one of the busiest Wal-Mart’s I’ve ever been too) and we were able to get some basic supplies like a shower curtain, towels, silverware, cups, cereal etc. But we soon realized that we needed a lot more than we came home with. Over the next several days we kept running into dead ends finding that we needed a conglomerate of small simple things like a can opener or scissors to complete even the simplest tasks, so we ended up making daily trips down to our beloved Wal-Mart, sometimes more than twice a day.

As you can imagine toting Benson and all of his gear around along with all the things we purchased proved difficult especially when we are using the bus to go from place to place, so we got smart and bout ourselves our own little cart!

This puppy has been a lifesaver! However we got off to a rocky start on our first venture with our little cart, when a block into our trek full of stuff the wheel magically popped off and rolled into the street. Lucky for us we were able to retrieve the darn thing without much trouble and we were able to jimmy rig the wheel back on with a bobby pin which is still to this day holding it in place quite well.
Thankfully Ben and I have also made friends with an AWESOME couple who have helped us out so so much they have literally been lifesavers here in Hawaii.  We met them at church our first Sunday and found out that they have a daughter who is just a month older than Benson and Steve (the husband) is actually working on his PHD in the same field that Ben is doing his Masters in. Anyways they have been super great and helped us out a lot by offering to take me along when Melissa (the wife) goes grocery shopping and they’ve helped us move our furniture and even made a special trip to help us get a crib for Benson. I swear they are the best! Not to mention they have agreed to be friends with us!  :D
Back to groceries, things here are definitely more expensive here than back in Arizona, some items have shocked me and made me a little unsettled when I debated about purchasing it.

For those who are wondering Milk really is $5 a gallon, so is 1 pound of beef, bread is nearly $3 a loaf and a can of black beans is bordering $3 as well. :/ Little Caesars’s $5 hot and ready’s are actually $7 and Subway’s $5 foot longs don’t even exist they are $7 and up as well.
Thankfully Melissa has shown me the light and taken me to Costco! I think Costco Is going to be our best friend here in Honolulu. I will still have to adjust to the idea of paying a large amount upfront for the bulk we receive but I know that it will definitely save us money over all! Here’s to saving money and fillin’ our bellies.
