My Sewing Adventures

My last post (over a month ago) talked about my 21st birthday and everything that made it so special.  However, this post will be completely devoted one of my favorite gifts I recieved, which was my very first sewing machine!

My sewing machine and sewing bag :)

Over the past few months or so I have been trying to find a new hobby. I wanted something I could do all on my own in my spare time that could also be self-fulfilling and rewarding. After much though I decided to try my hand at the art of sewing.

My first attempt:

The first time I got my sewing machine out I  became very ambitious and immediately ran down to Joann’s to find a nice easy pattern to work on. Lucky for me a lady at the store recognized an inexperienced sewer and gave me the 411 on the basic  things I needed to know. She then helped me select a nice and easy pattern (a sewing for dummies pattern) and fabric to start me off.

As you can imagine I was all gung hoe and wanted to jump right in, but I  decided to practice threading my machine and bobbins  a few times and then practiced sewing some simple straight lines. My first attempt went smoothly and I thought to myself  “this will be a synch” it was right then that my beginners luck apparently wore off because after that I ran into problem after problem for about two hours.  Needless to say,I became frustrated and decided to give up until I could have someone experienced to show me what to do.

A few days later one of my good friends and I decided to have a sewing day with her mom (an expert sewer.) I planned on working on the pattern I had bought the previous week to work on, but instead we both went and picked out fabric to do our first quilts! I was so excited because making a quilt is something I have always wanted to learn how to do. Lets just say, that i had a blast working on ym verey first quilt that day and i felt like I learned so much! Here are my results:

Of course my quilt is not done yet, but I am SUPER excited to work on it more whenever I get the chance! (I hope to post the finished product in the near future.)

A few short days later I was ITCHING to so some more sewing so got my machine out again and decided to mess with some of the leftover scraps of fabric I had from my quilt. Here are the results:

This one is my favorite!
I practiced sewing strips or fabric together and
then attempted to make some flowers.

Last but certainly not least I want to tell you guys about my most recent sewing adventure my new apron. I found these handy little patterns at Wal-Mart the other day and bought one. The fabric is all ready to be cut out and has easy instructions to follow. After a few hours of working this is what I accomplished:

The finished product

Of course after these few simple projects I don’t by any means call myself and expert sewer or seamstress; but I am definitely falling in love with sewing. Let's just say I think that I have officially found a new hobby.  :D

  2. Lauri, I am so jealous!! I've ALWAYS wanted to learn how to sew, but I just have clumsy fingers and tend to break sewing machines. You make it look so easy, you pretty much are gonna be a pro in no time :)

  3. Awesome job Lauri! I'm going to learn how to sew too when I have the time. I was able to get my mom's sewing machine.
